The Oily Edition: FAQ

Dear Sisters,

Do you know how much essential oils really cost? I’m not talking about the price you pay at your local grocery store. I am talking about what it takes to make a high-quality essential oil that does NOT contain any harmful ingredients or was harvested with toxic chemicals. I am going to share with you some information that you probably don’t know. I didn’t know this information until a few month’s ago.

You might recall that I spent 4 months last year researching essential oil’s, their companies and their leaders.

Here is what I discovered about…

The Real Cost of Essential Oils

Have you noticed that a there are a lot of stores are that are starting to sell essential oils? Have you noticed that those oils are cheaper than Young Living’s essential oil’s? Do you know why they are cheaper? Does quality matter to you?

Let’s start off by answering the question:

What are essential oil’s?

Essential oil’s are the life blood of plants. They are distilled from shrubs, flowers, roots, bushes, fruit, and herbs. They contain over 100 different natural, organic compounds.

They are distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, fruit, rinds, resins and herbs.

Essential oils consist of over 100 different natural, organic compounds.

In humans, they provide support for every system in your body: Your emotional system. (I wear my emotional support around my neck),  your circulatory system, respiratory system, muscular system and several more.

How is the quality of of essential oils determined? Here are the A to D’s from the best to the worst.

In the United States, there is NO rating system for essential oils. The closest that we come to having a grading system is an FDA requirement that in order to label a bottle of essential oils ‘pure’ or ‘therapeutic grade’, the contents of that bottle must contain at least 5% of essential oil.

There are 4 categories:

  1. Grade A is therapeutic. It is made from organically grown plants and distilled at low temperatures.
  2. Grade B oils are food grade, but may contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, chemical extenders, or carrier oils.
  3. Grade C oils are perfume oils that often contain adulterating chemicals. They usually use solvents. For example: hexane to gain a higher yield of oil per harvest. Solvents can be cancerous, and are often found in store-bought oils. They may also be diluted 80%-95% with alcohol.
  4. Grade D oil is ‘floral water.’ It is aromatic and usually a bi-product of Grade A distillation. After all the oil pulled out, the left-over trash water is sold to companies which will fill 5% of the bottle with the trash water and fill the rest of the bottle with carrier oils and then label it as pure.

How are Essential Oils Made?

It takes A LOT OF WORK to make a tiny amount of essential oil!

Did you know:

It takes 60 thousand rose blossoms to produce 1 ounce of oil?

It takes 220 pounds of lavender to produce 7 pounds of oil?

Jasmine flowers have to be picked by hand before the sun becomes hot on the very FIRST day that they open-thus making it one of the most expensive oils in the world? It takes 8 million hand-picked flowers to produce 2.2 pounds of oil!

A Sandalwood tree must be 30 years old and 30 feet high before it can be cut down for distillation?

How do you use essential oils and are they safe?

There are three main ways to get oils into your bodily systems:

1. The English apply it topically-rub them onto the skin.

2. The French ingest and cook with it.

3. The Germans diffuse and inhale-which can be the most effective method because it doesn’t have to pass through your digestive system.

How do they enter your body and how long do they last?

Tests have shown that oils reach the heart, liver, and thyroid in 3 seconds when inhaled; they were found in in the bloodstream within 26 seconds-when they were applied topically. Expulsion of essential oils takes three to six hours in a normal, healthy body.

Did you know that whatever you put on your skin gets into your bloodstream?
